History: The Legend of Chantereyne
The legend dates back to the 12th century.
Queen Matilda, the granddaughter of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, was at sea between Cotentin and the British Isles.
Suddenly, a storm arose, tossing the ship to and fro. As the situation was becoming more and more hopeless, Queen Matilda implored the Virgin Mary to save her, promising to build a Church on the spot where she would land.
Suddenly, land appeared amid the foaming waves.
The legend has it that the captain of the ship said to Matilda, “Chante Reine, voici la Terre !” (Sing, O Queen, for here is land!)
True to her vow, she ordered the construction of Notre Dame du Vœu abbey.
The hotel was built in 1984 on the Maritime Domain reclaimed from the sea, close to the spot where Queen Matilda landed.
Hence the name “
Hotel Chantereyne”.
